R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia is a Rioja producer that is widely regarded as one of the world's greatest wine estates. It was founded in 1877, and is well known for its traditional winemaking approach. It is particularly associated with its Tempranillo-based wines from the Tondonia vineyard, to the extent that this now forms part of the company name.
Viña Cubillo wines come from a farm called Viña Cubillas. Historically these wines were called Vendimia Especial. This farm is located 4 kms. from the winery in a straight line and was acquired by our great-grandfather, like all our vineyards. Its altitude is 465 m. and the average age of the vineyard is 40 years. The terrain is from the Tertiary era and is clay-limestone in nature.
Critic Tasting Notes: "The 2015 Viña Cubillo Tinto Crianza reflects the warmer conditions of the year, and with the riper fruit they picked to produce this wine, they still managed to keep around 13.5% alcohol. The Cubillo vineyard has more clay, and sometimes clay soils take heat better and make the wines fresher than those from poorer soils." - 93 pts, Robert Parker
