100% Petite Syrah. From Hayne Vineyard (planted in 1953). Aged 18 months in 80% French oak and 20% American oak (20% new).
Distributor Notes: "Turley Wine Cellars was founded in Napa Valley by Larry Turley in 1993. Because Larry has never met an old vine vineyard he didn’t like, Turley now makes 34 separate wines from 38 different vineyards, some with vines that date back to the late 1800s. Often weak and decaying, these old vine vineyards require extra care and attention in order to restore them to their former glory. After twenty-five years as an emergency room physician, Larry can now focus his resuscitative skills on the various old vineyards that comprise the wines he loves. All of the vineyards are either certified organic by California Certified Organic Farmers or somewhere in the process, and only natural yeasts are used in the fermentations. By focusing on old vine Zinfandels and Petite Syrahs in particular, Turley aims to both create and preserve California’s unique winemaking culture."
Winemaking Team Notes: "Otty Hayne planted the Hayne Petite Syrah in 1953 while he was home from college visiting his grandfather. All head-trained, dry-farmed and organic, this Petite Syrah is one of the most unique wines in California. Powerful and inky in its youth, the wine becomes more feminine and refined with age and will outlive us all.
There’s a reason we’ve made wine from the Hayne Vineyards longer than any others. Black plum, black cherry, graphite, cocoa, freshly turned earth, petrichor, ink, and gravel dust. Deep and intense yet extremely well-balanced and approachable. Drinks perfectly now at cellar temperature (about 55-65ºF) with a quick decant, but will age seemingly forever if stored properly."
